Twenty one of our libraries will open their doors to welcome customers, three more libraries will follow later on this month and the remaining five libraries will develop their plans to re-open in August or September.

A huge amount of work has taken place to ensure the safety of everyone in our libraries. Risk assessments have been undertaken for all sites and activities, supplies of gel, wipes, gloves, masks and visors are in place and we are now completing the final arrangements for reception desk screens and internal signs and markers.

Our arrangements are all based on official advice from the government and Public Health England. We have been challenged, at times, by guidance that lacks clarity and we have had to stay on top of rapidly changing guidance – often issued at very short notice.

So, for example, the announcement on the role of libraries in collecting customer data to support the NHS Test and Trace initiative was made only days ago.

Because of the ongoing restrictions regarding Covid-19, we want to keep all our staff and customers as safe as we can while in the library, so there are some restrictions to be aware of when using the library.

  1.  Most importantly – if you are feeling unwell please do not come to the library
  2. Due to social distancing, only 4 customers will be allowed in the library at any one time – so wherever possible please only one member of a family at once.  There is a one way system around the library so please follow the arrows.
  3. As you enter the library we will ask you to sanitise your hands – even if you are wearing gloves
  4.  As you will have heard, from 4th July, the Government requires businesses and other places the public visit to keep a record of their visitors for the previous 21 days. This is so that if required, the NHS Test & Trace service will be able to get in touch with anyone who was at that venue at the same time as someone who has tested positive, and so could be at risk of the virus. So, we will be asking for contact details from you as you enter the library in case we have to get in touch should there be anyone who enters the library who later come down with Covid-19 symptoms
  5. There will be no newspapers or magazines or seating
  6. The Children’s Library is closed but:
    a)  Packs of 10 picture books are available to take out – please take a bundle to the desk for issuing in the normal way
    b)  There is a small selection of board books, early readers, and competent reader’s books available to borrow
  7. Only one computer will be available for use
  8. There will be boxes outside the library for placing your returned books, which will then be quarantined for 72 hours – so if you check your account online within this time period your returned books will still appear on your card
  9. There is not a reservation service at present which allows you to order books from other libraries, but we have the Reserve and Collect service which allows you to specify particular genres of books you like and the library staff will select books for you.  You may like to use this service rather than coming to the library.
